On rocks in the subtidal zone to a depth of 5 fathoms. At the south
end of Shaw Island, near Canoe Island, Washington, U.S.A. (Lat.
48°34'N. Long. 122°55'W.).
DESCRIPTION: Thallus up to 35 cm. high, brownish red to deep red in
colour, with a few main axes and numerous shorter laterals tending to lie
in one plane. All orders of branching terete, generally 3-5 mm. in diameter
but frequently up to 5 mm. in main branches and at the base. Thallus
cartilaginous.

On rocks in the upper intertidal zone. Brown Island, near Friday
Harbor, Washington, U.S.A. (Lat. 48°32'N. Long. 123° W.).
DESCRIPTION: Thallus erect, up to 15 cm. high, dark brownish red to
brownish black in colour. The thallus profusely branched above, with 5-6
orders of branching. The branching is unilateral and pectinate, with pec-
tination alternate in successive orders of branching. Branches near the
apices incurved with forcipate tips.

DESCRIPTION: Thallus at maturity an ample, usually much divided
blade attached to the substratum by numerous branched haptera which
arise along the sessile margin of the blade. The distal portion of the blade
is usually densely bullate. Colour olive brown to brownish black.
