This plant seems to be the old Ulothrix flaccida Kuetz., and the same
species as the one studied by Gay and referred by him to the genus Sticho-
coccus. The stages of the development and the reasons for the change of
the generic name are given by Gay on pp. 59-66 of the treatise quoted above.
