  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. A brief history of Instituto de Pesquisas Agropecuária do Norte or IPEAN: Organized agricultural research in the Amazon began in 1939 with the creation of Instituto de Agronômico do Norte (IAN). In the 1960s, IAN was renamed Instituto de Pesquisas Agropecuária do Norte (IPEAN), and eventually IPEAN combined with Instituto de Pesquisa e Agricola da Amazônia Ocidental (IPEAAOC) to establish Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Embrapa) (Mansor de Mattos, Luciano and T. Deane de Abreu Sá. "Experiências da Embrapa sobre Produção Sustentável na Amazônia." Embrapa. accessed: 18 December 2013). Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of the grounds of Embrapa Amazônia Oriental in Belém, Pará. Referred to Embrapa website for general information and location of Embrapa (http://www.cpatu.embrapa.br/a-unidade/estrutura-funcional/laboratorios/botanica/). Using reference material and Google Maps - Satellite View, located the grounds of Embrapa. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the geographic center of the grounds of Embrapa. According to the Embrapa website, the Embrapa campus extends into Ananindeua, Pará. Used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent east of the forested area of Ananindeua; used this distance as the approximated linear extent of Embrapa. Input coordinates, linear extent (11078.2 m.), and measurement error (.1 m.) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
