Specimens show only the Pilinia or in some cases also the Palmella stage:
Thalli consisting of circular flat masses, solitary, confluent or piled upon
each other, sometimes forming a continuous stratum, dark green or
bluish-gray, often showing fine sand-like grains, or sometimes “ capped”
by large grains of lime; lower cells of filament 5—7.5 mik. in width,
with a length of 2.5—3 times as much; upper cells 7.5 mik. in diameter
and 2.5 times as long; ends of branches subulate; megazoospores 1—4 in
a cell, 6.5—7.5 mik. in diameter; crystal plates of calcium carbonate
present.
