  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Referred to Geonames.org website for locality information for Igarapé Itaúba (http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_-3.728_-60.459.html, accessed: 9/30/2014). Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Igarapé Itaúba, a tributary of Lago Castanho, in Mun. Manaquiri, Amazonas. Used the reference material and Google Maps - Earth View to locate Igarapé Itaúba. Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to measure a straight line between the approximate geographic center of the mouth of Igarapé Itaúba (confluence of Igarapé Itaúba and Lago Castanho) and the headwaters of the stream (approximated through the dense forest cover), then halved this distance to find the midpoint of this line. Chose a point along Igarapé Itaúba nearest to the midpoint of this line; used Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of the stream. Input coordinates, linear extent (1600.0 m), and measurement error (25 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
