The Indian specimens of this variety, which reach a length of
15 cm., agree well with the West Indian. The most characteristic
feature lies in the absence of the hook-shaped spines found in the
typical form. The ramuli run out into a long apical spine. They
reach 1 mm. in length at their base and are about 60 [x thick and
taper gradually upwards. Their component cells are about as long
as broad, or a little shorter at the base; higher up they are proportion-
ately longer, up to about times the breadth. The thallus is
terete and corticated in the older parts. The branching is more or
less markedly distichous, but not always quite regular, now and then
a branch being placed between the otherwise distichously arranged
ramuli. (Renewed examination of my West Indian plant showed a
similar case.) No tendrils were found. The Indian plant growing in
exposed situations showed a more robust thallus than the West
Indian one. The feathery appearance of this species distinguishes
it easily from S. filamentosa.
The occurrence of S. aculeata in the Indian Ocean is of interest
as its hitherto most eastern locality was the Red Sea ; elsewhere it is
common in the West Indies and it is also found on the shores of
Spain, Morocco and the Canary Islands. According to De Toni its
occurrence in the Mediterranean Sea seems to be doubtful.
Tetrasporangia were found in January. Mjua^	- ¡-I ^ 3!
