  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Referred to Geonames.org for locality information for Santa Maria de Nanay, synonymous with Santa Maria del Alto Nanay (http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_-3.889_-73.696.html, accessed: 6/26/2015). Also referred to similar locality descriptions of collections made in the vicinity (example: "Mishana, Río Nanay half-way between Iquitos and Santa Maria de Nanay" with coordinates provided by collector: -3.83, -73.50). Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Santa Maria del Alto Nanay located along Rio Nanay in Maynas, Peru, taking into account the added uncertainty of the word "vicinity" stated in the locality description. Used the reference materials and Google Maps - Earth View to locate the approximate geographic center of Santa Maria del Alto Nanay. Used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates. Geonames.org also provides the name of the nearest named village to Santa Maria del Alto Nanay, Pisco (http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_-3.889_-73.696.html). Because there are no clearly defined spatial boundaries of Santa Maria del Alto Nanay, used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the approximate geographic center of Pisco, then halving this distance (900 m). Followed the "Near a Feature" method of the Biogeomancer Guide to Best Practices for Georeferencing; used 2 km as the linear extent. Input coordinates, coordinate precision (.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), linear extent (2000 m), and measurement error (25 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide to find the uncertainty radius (according to Biogeomancer Guide to Best Practices for Georeferencing, Near a Feature).
