  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to what was determined to be the "lower" portion of Rio Momón, mid-way point between the approximate geographic midpoint of Rio Momón and the mouth of Rio Momón (confluence of Rio Momón and Rio Nanay) near Iquitos in Maynas Province, Peru. Used Google Maps - Earth View to locate Rio Momón, a tributary of Rio Nanay. Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to measure a straight line between the mouth of the river (confluence of Rio Momón and Rio Nanay) and the headwaters of Rio Momón (approximated through the dense forest cover, at -3.437713, -73.522385), totaling 39.85 km, then halved the distance to find the midpoint of the line (19.925 km). Chose a point along Rio Momón closest to the midpoint line; used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates (-3.553114, -73.378937). Repeated this process to find the approximate geographic midpoint between the selected coordinates (of the geographic midpoint of Rio Momón) and mouth of the river, determined to be the "lower" portion of Rio Momón (distance of 19.6 km, halved to 9.8 km). Moved midpoint along to the shore of Rio Momón (collection assumed to be terrestrial); used Google Maps – What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the midpoint of the lower portion of the river (-3.627688, -73.334364). Used the Google Maps – Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent of the lower portion of the river by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of this segment of river. Input coordinates, coordinate source (locality description), datum (WGS84), coordinate precision (0.00001 degrees), extent of named place (9800 m), and measurement error (10 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find uncertainty radius.
