The plant from the New England coast which has gone by
the name of P. cruenta appears to belong rather to this species.
It is seldom as well developed as the plant of the Pacific coast,
distributed as P. B.-A., No. 900, but there is always a much more
noticeable parenchymatous basal layer than in the true P. cruenta.
