Distribution
Josephine E. Tilden. American Algae. 321. Nitophyllu'm multilobum J. Ag. Spec. Gen. et Ord. Algar. 3:698.1876. Frond stipitate, soon expanding into fan-shaped, dichotomously-decom- pound segments, veined ; segments obtusely lobed ; cystocarps scattered over entire upper portion of frond. On rocks under Zostera. Low tide. Baird Cove, Strait of Juan de Fuca, Vancouver island, British Columbia. J. E. T. 1 Au 1898. According to Agardh this species produces tetragonidia in transverse zones, but no statement is made regarding cystocarps. Upon comparison with authentic herbarium specimens of N. multilobum (with tetragonidia) and N. violaceum (sterile) the above plant seems to resemble the former more closely in texture and in form. In N. violaceum the frond is much more deeply cleft and the segments are more linear. NEW YORK BOTANICAL G/ 02184643 02184643
