  • Description

    Pileus 14.6 cm broad, circular, convex, margin appendiculate, surface moist, dull, shaggy, tesselated at center, more or less appressed elsewhere (but not smooth), pale creamy tan (5A4-5B4) over an off-white undersurface. Flesh firm to 35 mm thick at center, pale yellow (2A5), rapidly bruising blue when cut, with numerous yellow invertebrate tunnels, some deep maroon. Pores up to 3 mm diameter, elongated near stipe, yellow (4A5/4B6), in places tinged slightly rust, bruising blue, dry, slightly uneven surface. Tubes sinuate, narrowly attached, with very long line on stipe apex, up to 37 mm long, yellow (2A6), bruising blue. Stipe 16 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, central, terete, equal almost to top, then narrowing markedly; dry, appressed fibrillose near base, squamulose above, creamy-tan (4A3-5A3) with pale maroon (near 12B6) ring at apex, below tubes. attachment. Flesh hard, solid, creamy white, bruising apricot when cut (between 4A4 & 5A4). Odor none; not tasted. Spores up to 21 µm long, ribbed, lacking cross striations.
