Nat., Series 3, Bot., Vol. XT. p. 38, 1848. Washed ashore in considerable quantity at Hope Bay, Jamaica, July, 1894. MRS. C. E. PEASE and MISS E. BUTLER. The specimen is but a relatively small fragment of the individual plant, which is often over a metre in length ; the form is pyramidal, the general habit being that of a fir tree, to which it was likened in the original descrip- tion. The following words used by Montagne in this description are certainly well deserved : ? Alga maxime spectabilis et inter omnes species ‹urjns generis facile pulcherrima.? the f. s.
