Mr, Marshall A. Howe,

My dear Mr. Howe:~
I am sorry to find that specimens of Lemanaa which you sent last
February have not yet "been reported upon. I kept them in my table
drawer where I thought I would get at them soon, and you see the
result. I have looked them over this morning. The one from Georgi?
is I think, without doubt the Lemanaa australis Atkinson, though
specimens collected during the summer usually do not show the earlier
characters, nor do they show specific characters so well as material
collected late in winter.
The specimen from Basbish Falls, N.Y., is L.(Sacheria)fucina Bor
variety rigida(Sirdt.)Atkinson. This specimen is interesting if the
date of collection is right, that is, August 5th, for the chantransia
stage is still present, and many sexual shoots in quite a young stage
though there are a sufficiently large number of mature ones to admit
of determination. The specimens are small forms of this variety,
which is c^uite variable in size. I return a portion of the latter
specimen as you suggest.
I will try to do better another time, in giving more prompt
attention to any material which you may wish to send me.
Very truly yours,
Mo-T-
