Frond stipitate, linear-obovate, simple or laciniate, 1-2 dm. in width, 4-7 dm. in length, dull purple or brown, sometimes rich purple in color ; holdfast small, flat, circular; stipe 1-4 cm. in length, cylindrical at base, soon expanding into base of frond ; sterile fronds smooth and strongly irridescent ; cystocarps somewhat prominent, up to 2 mm. in diameter, scattered; tetragonidia occurring in minute, immersed sori, closely dotted over surface of frond which remains smooth, a.
