Distribution
Eymenena Kylinii Gardner ep.nov, IJniv,California Tubi.Bot.12:242.II.22. f.1-2,28 F 1927 AJ*** Fronds erect and rigid, 8-10 cm.(up to 20 tm.jhigh, 5-8 mm. wide, dichotomously or subdiohotomously and sparsely branched, with linear segments, limit apices, and smooth margins; usually much contorted, and the antheridial plants more or less orisped, attached by flattened, branched outgrowths at the base, short stipitatejmidrib becoming the stipe below, branching into the segments above and vanishing before reaching the apices; microscopic ye inlets absent or rare; cystocarps distributed over the segments without order; antheridia confined more generally in irregular sori near the apices and along the margins; tetrasporangia arranged in narrow, longitudinal or in part flabellar, anastomosing sori. Growing on rooks exposed to heavy surf in the lower littoral belt, central California. 2type locality, lands End, San Francisco. Nitophyllum Harveyanum lott, IJito.of Calif. ,1900, p. 29 (not of J, Ag.j. Collins, Holden^ and Setohell, phyo. Bor.-Amer. (Exsicc.) no.- 692. Xylin (1924, p. 83), in discussing Eymenena flabelligera (J. Ag.) Kyi in, remarks that there are two sped mens in J.G. Agardh's herbarium under the name of Hitophyllm fl&helligerm, J. Ag.,collected by Berggren in the Golden Gate, California. In figure 68 (loo.oit,)hhe presents an illustration of these two specimens, one of which is several times larger than the other. He considers the larger of these as the type of Agardh's I. flabelligerum and likens the other to the plants distributed in the Phycotheoa Boreali Americana, no. 693 (under fl, Harveyanum), cited above. It is hia opinion that the plants of this dis- tribution, which are from the type locality of the above mention- ed plants in Agardh's herbarium, are not identical with the material of U. Harveyanum from " Australia." On page 81 (loo.oit.) in discussing I.' Harveyanum j. Ag., Eylin states that the type specimen of this species is in Agardh's herbarium, that it is a tetrasporio plant, and that the tetrasporio sori are distributed over the middle parts of the frond. Figure 65 (loo.oit) represents this type specimen, fflie illustration shows it to be very different in general form from our plant and, as suggested by Kyi in, it be- longs to an undesoribei species. I am here dedicating the species to him. Its nearest known relative would seem to be Eymenena flabelligera (J. Ag.) Xylin. The most striking resemblance be- tween these two species is the flabellate arrangement of the tetrasporio sori. I. Kylinii is very much smaller and less com- plex In branching than H. flabelligera and different In general habit, the former being muol more rigid and contorted. 02214393 HOTAMšH OT Umtobsett or CiuroY0RIC MEW YORK Mffi YORK ^OTANICAL GAR&sti Herbarium of the Umvmsirr of California ALO’ OF CALIFORNIA Hymenena Kylinll Gardner Floating in small masses in a water trough, Berkeley, Alameda CountyŻ S* LŻ Gardner 1454 January 28, 1905 January 28, 1905 02214393
