Distribution
Hymenena Kylinii Gardner sp.nov#, hiv.”alifornia Hll.Bot,lŤ:242Ż$1,32Ż f*lm?Ż88 f VIVI* Fronds erect and rigid, 8-10 cm,(up to 20 OB,)bigh, 5-8 mm, wide, dichotomously or subdichotomously and sparsely branched, with linear segments, blunt apices, and smooth margins; usually much contorted, and the antheridial plants more or less crisped, attached by flattened, branched outgrowths at the base, short stipitate;midrib becoming the stipe below, branching into the segments above and vanishing before reaching the apices; microscopic veinlets absent or rare; cystocarps distributed over the segments without order; antheridia confined more generally in irregular sori near the apices and along the margins; tetrasporangia arranged in narrow, longitudinal or in part flabellar, anastomosing sori, Growing on rocks exposed to heavy surf in the lower littoral "belt, central California, type locality, lands End, San Francisco. Uitophyllum Harveyanum lott, Uito,of Calif,,1900, p, 29 (not of J, Ag.}, Collins, Holden, and Setohell, phyc. Bor.-Amer. (Sxsicc.j no? 692, Kylin (1924, p. 63), in discussing Fymenena flabelligera (J. Ag.) Kyi in, remarks that there are two specimens in j,ff. Agardh's herbarium under the name of Eitophyllw flabelligerwn, J, Ag.,collected by Berggren in the Golden Gate, California, In figure 68 (loo.oit.)hhe presents an illustration of these two specimens, one of which is several times larger than the other. He considers the larger of these as the type of Agardh's H. flabelligerum and likens the other to the plants distributed in the Phycotheca Boreali Americana, no. 693 (under J. Earveyanum), cited above. It is his opinion that the plants of this dis- tribution, which are from the type locality of the above mention- ed plants in Agardh's herbarium, are not identical with the material of I. Earveyanum from " Australia." on page 81 (loo.oit.) in discussing I.1 Harveyanum j. Ag,, Kylin states that the type specimen of this species Is in Agardh's herbarium, that it is a tetrasporio plant, and that the tetrasporio sori are distributed over the middle parts of the frond. Figure 65 (loo.oit) represents this type specimen. She illustration shows it to be very different in general form from our plant and, as suggested by Kylin, it be- longs to an undescribei species. I am here dedicating the species to him. Its nearest known relative would seem to be Eymenena flabelligera (J. Ag.) Kylin. Hhe most striking resemblance be- tween these two species is the flabellate arrangement of the tetrasporio sori. I. Kylinii is very much smaller and less com- plex in branching than H. flabelligera and different in general habit, the former being muol. more rigid and contorted. 02214393 Herbarium of the University of Caufobnia NEW YORK 02214394 YORK BOTANICA1- GARBZH Herbarium of the TJmvmsirr of California.
