Hot dry sand-gravelly river bottom.

Description
Low spreading shrub. Stem a few inches thick, branched from the base; branches widely spreading, rigid, breaking with a snap, 3 to 5 ft long; wood hard, reddish brown except the thin sapwood, radially sprinkled, odorless and tasteless; bark coarsely checked longitudinally, dull gray; leaves rigidly coriaceous, ascending, flat, a trifle paler green beneath; flowers white, pendulous. young leaves red. Phenology of specimen: Flower, Fruit.
