Frond stipitate, soon expanding into a lanceolate-oblong fleshy mem-
branaceous lamina purplish-red in color, 6-18 cm. in width, 30-50 cm.
in lengtn; stipe 15 20 mm. long; holdfast disc-shaped, 3-5 mm. in
diameter; sterile specimens smooth; or margin and disc may be cov-
ered with spinous processes; cystocarps distributed over both surfaces
of frond, developed either directly from lamina or upon spinous pro-
cesses.
