Phycotheca Boreali-Americana. Collins, Holden, and Setchell. XVIII. Gigartlna radula (Esper) J. Ag., forma BXBSPBfttS (Bail. & Harv.) Farlow. Farlow, Report of TJ. S. Fish Commission for 1875, p. 700, 1876. (As variety.) G. exasperata Bailey & Harvey, Proc. Boston Soc. Nat. Hist., Vol. Ill, p. 371,1851; Bot. Wilkes Exped., p. 163, PI. V, 1862. Harvey, Nereis Bor.-Am., part 2, p 177,1853. Farlow, Proc. Amer. Acad., Yol. X, p. 370,1875. J. G. Agardh, Sp. Alg., Yol. Ill, pp. 202 & 686,1876. De Toni, Syll. Alg. Vol. IV, p. 224,1897. Abundant and in many cases of large size, on stones, just below extreme low water mark, Pyramid Point, Monterey County, California, Jan. 8, 1899. W. A. SETCHELL & R. E. GIBBS. The type of G. exasperata Bail. & Harv., as evidenced by the descip- tion and by a duplicate in herb. Farlow, is simply the young of the ex- panded form of G. radula, which grows in deeper water. It sometimes reaches a length of 100-150 cm. In spite of its size and peculiar red color, it intergrades with the typical form to such an extent that it cannot be separated very widely from it. It is a plant of the deeper and more quiet water. With cystocarps. 02196228
