GELIDTDM PUSILLUM, Le Jol.
The original description of Fucus pusillus (Stackhouse >7<
Brit. p. 16* is, I conclude, based on the gathering from Sidmd
and supplemented by the specimens from Brighton. Borrer's Br}
gathering is at Kew, and consists, in part at any rate, of Ge]
crinale, a fact which accounts for a certain vagueness in Da?.v&u®
Turner's figures and perhaps also in Stackhouse's fig. C, (Plateivi).
The typical forms of these two species are very distinct, but
occasionally puzzling intermediates occur. I enclose two specimens
! of G. pus ilium (tetrasporic and cystocarpic) as understood in this
country and on the Continent: it is not uncommon on bare shaded
1 rocks (see Stackhouse fig. A). G. crinale, on the other hand, is
usually found on sandy rocks (i.e. rocks more or less covered
| with loose sand), or in sandy rock-pools, and is, as will be seen
from Batters' Catalogue, a very variable species.
The short form of G. aculeatum known as var. abnorme, Batters
has been at times mistaken for G. pusilium. I enclose a specimen
of this and also of G. crinale.
