(fig- 3) I.e., p. 51, pi. 4, figs, 4-16; pi. 20, fig. 19; Tanaka, I.e., p, 148, figs. 7-8, pi. 35, fig. 2. The thallus is villous and is subdichotomously branched. The internodes are cylindrical, to 1.3 mm. diam. and 1.5 cm. long. The outer assimilating layer consists of two kinds of filaments, long and short, arising from supporting cells. The long assimilating filaments are simple, to 20/i diam. The short ones consists of only three (rarely two) cells, the basal one of which is always the largest, being elliptical to ovate. The supporting cells are very well developed, irregularly trigonal to quadrate, 33-45ft diam. (cf. fig- 3> a)- The central axis consists of loosely entangled filaments, 8-15\x diam. The tetrasporangi a are cruciately divid- ed, 24-30/1 diam. and are borne singly or rarely in pairs, terminally or some- times laterally on the long filaments (cf. fig- 3* b). The plant is dull reddish brown to reddish green in color. HAB. On rocks in the litoral belt; also washed ashore.
