Galaxaura frutioulosa Kjellm. Bull. Fan Mem.
Inst. Biol. 239, fig. 3. Mr. 1937
28. Galaxaura frutieulosa Kjellm.
(fig- 3)
I.e., p. 51, pi. 4, figs, 4-16; pi. 20, fig. 19; Tanaka, I.e., p, 148, figs. 7-8, pi. 35, fig. 2.
The thallus is villous and is subdichotomously branched. The
internodes are cylindrical, to 1.3 mm. diam. and 1.5 cm. long.
The outer assimilating layer consists of
two kinds of filaments, long and short,
arising from supporting cells. The long
assimilating filaments are simple, to
20/i diam. The short ones consists of
only three (rarely two) cells, the basal
one of which is always the largest, being
elliptical to ovate. The supporting
cells are very well developed, irregularly
trigonal to quadrate, 33-45ft diam. (cf.
fig- 3> a)- The central axis consists of
loosely entangled filaments, 8-15\x diam.
The tetrasporangi a are cruciately divid-
ed, 24-30/1 diam. and are borne singly
or rarely in pairs, terminally or some-
times laterally on the long filaments (cf.
fig- 3* b). The plant is dull reddish
brown to reddish green in color.
HAB. On rocks in the litoral belt; also washed ashore. Hong
Kong: Stanley Beach, in December (Tseng 250) and Li-e-mun Pass, in
May (Tseng 34-la)', Pratas I., in August-September (Tseng 1204).
