Distribution
898. Farlowia mollis (Harv. and Bail.) Farlow and Setchell ms. Gigartina mollis Harvey and Bailey, Proc. Boston Soc. Nat. Hist., Vol. Ill, p. 372, 1851. Harvey, Nereis Bor.-Am., part 2, p. 175, 1852; Proc. Linn. Soc., Vol. VI, p. 173, 1862. Farlow, Proc. Amer. Acad., Vol. X, p. 370, 1875 ; Report of U. S. Fish Commission for 1875, p. 700, 1876. Anderson, Zoe, Vol. II, p. 223, 1891. J. G. Agardh, Sp. Alg., Vol. Ill, p. 191, 1876. V De Toni, Sylloge Algarum, Vol. IV, p. 200, 1897. On rocks in tide pools, litoral zone, Dillon?s Beach, entrance to Tomales Bay, Marin County, California, Dec. 12, 1898. W. A. SETCHELL and B. E. GIBBS. The specimens distributed under this number seem to agree so well with the description of Gigartina mollis Harv. and Bailey, as well as with an authentic specimen, that they are placed under that species. These specimens, however, are a true species of Farlowia, in the sense of Agardh and Schmitz. Consequently it has become necessary to remove the species to that genus. W. A. S. 02180421
