The tetrasporangia and the cystocarps of this species have never been
described. They occur upon papillae, or small leaflets, from the surfaces of
the frond. The cystocarp is Gigartinaceous in its character, and the genus
should remain with the Gigartinaceae, where J. G. Agardh placed it, and
not with the Dumontiaceae, to which Schmitz, (cf. Engler & Prantl, Die
Natuerlichen Pflanzenfamilien, Teil. 1, Abt. 2, p. 521,1897) seems inclined
to refer it. P. B.-A. No. 50 is a typical sterile plant, such as the one upon
which the species and the genus were founded. These specimens are tet-
rasporic.
