    Assoc.: Osmunda cinnamomea (with fronds reaching 5 ft. 6 in. tall), Carex crinita & Thelypteris simulata around mossy pools, Maianthemum canadense, Symplocarpus foetidus, Coptis groenlandica, Trientalis borealis, Mitchella repens, Nemopanthus mucronatus, Ilex verticillata, Hamamelis virg. Rich mixed northern hardwoods (Acer rubrum dominant, w/ Pinus strobus, Betula papyrifera). Swampy, hummocky, slightly acid ground.

    Plants dioecious (at least this population), from a globose root 5-8 cm below soil surface; cor. white, fading pale pinkish; styles white in flr., turning lavender; frt. green. Phenology of specimen: Flower, Fruit.
