Fronds minute, fragile, 4-7 ram. high, attached by a branched, discoid base, in part prostrate and attach- ed by compound rhizoids 3-4 cells long, arising from the basal cell of a branch, becoming discoid at their distal ends; main axes percurrent, sparsely branched, 50-75u diam.at the base, tapering very gradually to the apices; main axes and branches clothed with gemi- nate, opposite ramuli from every cell; no ramuli opposite the branches; geminate ramuli giving rise on the adaxial side to 6-8 terminal, secund.straight ramuli or bending outward slightly from the main axes, rarely extending beyond the apices of the ramuli from which they arise, composed of 6-10 cylindrical cells, frequently a diminutive branch arising from the under side of the basal cell of the geminate ramuli; cells of the main axes 2-3 times as long as broad, slightly swollen at the nodes; cells of the geminate ramuli 24-28u diam. at the base of the ramuli, 2-2.5 times as long as broad; cells of the ultimate ramuli 16-20}i diam.,2-2.5 times as long as broad; tetrasporangia ellipsoidal, 75-80u long, 48-54u broad, terminal or lateral and sessile on the lower ultimate ramuli; antheridia forming cylindrical clusters on the adaxial side of the ultimate ramuli; gland cells sparse, at the apices of the ultimate ramuli; Growing on other algae. Southern coast of California, San Pedro to San Diego. Type, Gardner, no. 5090 ( Herb. Univ. Calif, no. 296663), La Jolla, growing on the stipe of pelagophycus porra. July. 3?his species of Antithamnion is marked by diminutive size, simplicity of fronds, and great regularity in position and size of the geminate and ultimate ramuli. It is like Antithamnion defectum Kylin in the absence of a ramulus op- posite the branches and similar to the same species in the characters of the ramuli. 02142867
