Antithamnion pygmaeum Gardner, sp.nov.
Univ.Calif.Publ.Bot.13j413.pl.91-93. 27 S 1927.
Fronds minute, fragile, 4-7 ram. high, attached by
a branched, discoid base, in part prostrate and attach-
ed by compound rhizoids 3-4 cells long, arising from
the basal cell of a branch, becoming discoid at their
distal ends; main axes percurrent, sparsely branched,
50-75u diam.at the base, tapering very gradually to
the apices; main axes and branches clothed with gemi-
nate, opposite ramuli from every cell; no ramuli
opposite the branches; geminate ramuli giving rise
on the adaxial side to 6-8 terminal, secund.straight
ramuli or bending outward slightly from the main axes,
rarely extending beyond the apices of the ramuli from
which they arise, composed of 6-10 cylindrical cells,
frequently a diminutive branch arising from the under
side of the basal cell of the geminate ramuli; cells
of the main axes 2-3 times as long as broad, slightly
swollen at the nodes; cells of the geminate ramuli
24-28u diam. at the base of the ramuli, 2-2.5 times
as long as broad; cells of the ultimate ramuli 16-20}i
diam.,2-2.5 times as long as broad; tetrasporangia
ellipsoidal, 75-80u long, 48-54u broad, terminal or
lateral and sessile on the lower ultimate ramuli;
antheridia forming cylindrical clusters on the adaxial
side of the ultimate ramuli; gland cells sparse, at
the apices of the ultimate ramuli;
Growing on other algae. Southern coast of
California, San Pedro to San Diego. Type, Gardner,
no. 5090 ( Herb. Univ. Calif, no. 296663), La Jolla,
growing on the stipe of pelagophycus porra. July.
3?his species of Antithamnion is marked by
diminutive size, simplicity of fronds, and great
regularity in position and size of the geminate
and ultimate ramuli. It is like Antithamnion
defectum Kylin in the absence of a ramulus op-
posite the branches and similar to the same
species in the characters of the ramuli.
