Filamentis magnis, atroviridibus, inter cellulis leviter con-
strictis; cellulis fere cylindricis vel inflatis, 25-38/x x 28-130/x ;
chromatophoris densis; membranis incrassatis ,3-7.2/*, lamellati s,
H-partis distinctis.

216	CONTR. BIOL. LAB. SCI. SOC. CHINA vol. ix. dec.

Filaments large, deep green, slightly constricted between
the cells; cells nearly cylindrical or inflated, 35-38/a diam., 1-4
diam. long; cell wall 3-7.2 thick, distinctly lamellate; chromato-
phore dense, covering whole inner surface of the wall, H-piece
wall clear.

The present species in some respect resembles M. crassior
(Hansg.) Hazen from which it is distinguished by its thicker
cell wall and longer cells. The diameter of the cells of the same
filament is more or less variable. The filaments often break
at the articulated portion of the H-shaped pieces of the cell walls.
The inner part of the cell wall is heavily impregnated with
cellulose and is distinctly lamellate. Because the chromatophore
is dense, the nucleus is usually obscured. Occasionally simple
attaching cell (very rare) may be seen.

The material appeared as thick tangled masses mixed with
filaments of Vaucheria in a drying ditch.

and the variable dimensions of the cells.

B.	A portion of the filament showing the structure of the ( CBLSS • Cil» I

C.	One of the H-shaped pieces of the cell wall.

D.	End portion of a filament showing the simple attaching
cell.

E.	One of the brocken ends of the filaments showing the
protoplast enclosed by cellulose layers.
