254. Chara foetida A. Br. var.

Plants short, 6-8 cm. in height, grayish-green, covered with lime, not

very much branched ; stems and branches corticated ; cortex cells about
twice as many as the leaves in the whorl next above; internode 10-15

mm. in length ; stem 480-500 mic. in diam.; stipular whorl double;
spines 011 the stem short, scarcely noticed ; leaves 5-7 mm. in length,
6-8 in a whorl, with 3-4 corticated internodes and generally three
naked internodes at the upper end, corticated and uncorticated por-
tions about equal in length; end cell of leaf sharply pointed; monoe-
cious; 1-3 oogonia and antheridia borne on a single node, generally
1-2 onlv persistent; antheridium 280 mic. in diameter; oogonium
ovate, 280 mic. wide, 420 mic. long, wich generally 10 striae; crown
short with somewhat broad cells; 170 mic. broad at base, 70 mic.
high; oosperm 280 mic. wide, 420 mic. long, color nearly black; two
bracts at fertile joint 2-5 length of oogonium, the other two a little
shorter.
