369. Chara foetida A Br. var.

Plant 20-40 cm. in length, grayish-green, covered with lime, not much
branched; stems and branches corticated; cortex cells about twice as
many as the leaves in the whorl next above; stipular whorl double; spines
on stem short; leaves about 1 mm. in length, with 1-3 corticated nodes
and 1-3 naked ones; end cell of leaf acute; monoecious, a single oogon-
ium and antheridium borne on a node; antheridium 350-420 mic. in di-
ameter; oogonium ovate, 630-700 x 420-490 mic., with generally 12
striae; crown short with somewhat broad cells, 140-210 mic. broad at
base, 70-140 mic. high; oosperm 420-560 mic. long, and 280-350 mic.
broad, color nearly black; four bracts at fertile joints, two longer than
oogonium and two about the same length.
