Montane volcanic forest. Quercus costaricensis.

Description

Pileus 55-80 mm dia, all mature, surface dry, disc and inner margin often with small oatch-like covering (dried gluten?), plano-convex or convex to plane or uplifted, more or less broadly subumbonate, edge more or less decurved to plane or somewhat uplifted in age, edge narrowly enrolled at first, color of margin and disc at first more or less Mikado Brown ( more or less darker in center and deeper reddish Cinnamon Brown) and paler at the edge, outer margin often with faint lilac cast, in age surface more or less evenly dark Mikado Brown with strongest colors in small patches (ground collor in between light brown), outer margin becoming shiny and with orangish red brown cast. Odor pungent, taste bitter. Context to 13 mm on disc, thinner over outer portion of margin, white to whitish, developing yellowish and brownish stains (lilac only at surface as a line, no lilacin contexxt). Lamellae to 40 mm long, to 9 mm wide, more or less ventricose mature, adnexed, moderately thick to thin, at first a purplish deep vinaceous color, more or less persistent, eventually rusty brown from spores, edges more or less even, lamellulae in 3's, length of longest variable, mid-lamellae 14-16 L+1/cm, close to crowded. Stipe to 100 mm long, apex to 13 mm, base bulbous, up to 23 mm, rounded, oblique to slightly depressed above it, basal mycelium whitish, rim of bulb and stipe stained ochraceous to yellowish or deep rust brown, upper 1/2 or more lilac at first, somewhat fragile.
