PENIUM, DIGITUS (EHRB.) 3RE3. - Fresh-water Algae of the United States page 18, February 1872* (Smithsonian contribution to know- ledge, 241) • P* Cellulis ovato-cylindricis, diametro 3-5 plo longioribus, utro- que polo parum attenuatis, sub-truncato-rotundatis; laminis chlorophyllaceis peripherloe lobatis, medio interruptis. Di«m*-13/7500" « .00173" - £2/7500" - ,0029". Syn.-P* Digitus, (EHR3*) BRE3* BABENHORST, Flora Europ* Algar*, Sect. Ill* p. 118« Cells ovately cylindrical, 3-5 times as long aB broad, at each end slightly attenuate, subtruncately rounded; ohlorophyl lamina lobate on the periphery, Interrupted in the middle, REMAEES*-This species is probably widely diffused through the tem- perate portions of north America. I have found it abundantly near Philadelphia, as well as among the Alleghanies, and have received specimens from Dr. Lewis, collected in Saco Lake, Northern Hew York; Prof* Bailey also notes it as occurring in Georgia. There is one foim of it which resembles somewhat in outline the modern coffin, one end being much broader and much more rapidly narrowed than the other* There is no distinct vacuole at the end, at least in any specimen I remember to have seen, al- though frequently large numbers of moving granules can be detected in that portion of the frond* Fig* 6, pi* 20, represents the outline of a frond of this species. / 02014724
