Dear Dr. Britton:

I wish to express to you the satisfaction I feel in the
possession of the various publications on the characeae you were
so good to give me. I have had them all bound, along with some
other papers on the subject, and fidn them all very useful. It
may be that after a time I will begin to know those strange plants
fairly well. For it is my intention to collect wherever I can
and study them particularly.

We have here what I take to be C. Schweinitzii that has been
growing through the winter in a ditch which receives a constant
supply of warm water from the sewage pumping plant. You may be
interested to see the enclosed photographs of the growing plant
collected at different dates. No. 16 2/29/18, No.17 4/15/13.

This i8 reputed to be a very variable species and I find that is
so in several ways, apart from the difference in vegetative growth
shown in the photographs. The earlier collection sKows fruits
quite mature while in the later the oogonia are not full grown.

These photographs seem to be more satisfactory to examine
than dried specimens. A magnifier shows the brae t eol e& ,ir_
ally and the leaves and branching	are well brought out.
