240. Haplopappus nanus (Nutt.) D. C. Eaton.

Benton Range, Mono County, California. At summit of road
west of Benton, at 2000 m. altitude.

Subshrubs tending to globoid in outline, from a few cm. to
3 dm. high, the largest 6 dm. across; old trunks much twisted,
gnarled, blackish, brittle with much dead wood, up to 5 cm. in
diameter; ray-flowers 4 to 8.

Rather common in brown granite gravel in crevices of rocks,
in the Pinon-Juniper association.

Near-by plants of this Haplopappus yielded about 7 to 9% of
rubber (see Univ. Calif. Pub. Bot. 7:269. 1919).
