Gray var. farinosa Liebre Mountains, Castaic Valley along Lake Hughes Road just east of Castaic Lake. Near 34° 31’07.1 ”N 118° 35’37.8” W. T6N R16W SW 1/4 NW 1/4 NE1/4 sec. 19. Elevation ca. 1680 ft. Steep slope of cobbley alluvial sediments. Vegetation a low scrub of Eriogonum fasciculatum var. foliolosum, Artemisia californica, Salvia apiana, Salvia mellifera, Salvia leucophylla, Lotus scoparius, and Senecio flaccidus var. douglasii. Shrub, leaves white, ray flowers yellow, disk flowers yellowish brown, inflorescences well branched. Locally common colonies along well vegetated roadcuts and fill slopes. It appears that Encelia californica and Encelia farinosa have been seeded onto cut and fill slopes along this stretch of road sometime in the past and are now hybridizing freely and beginning to naturalize.
