Soft fine pumice soil, becoming alkaline. Streambanks of dense thatch of Carex nebrascensis, Juncus balticus, Hordeum spp., Glaux maritima, Cirsium scariosum, Iris missouriensis, Sisyrinchium halophilum. Saltgrass meadows dominated by Distichlis spicata, Pyrrocoma lanceolata. Common on grazed areas above riverbanks. Flws violet, no stems.
