Cirsium muti cum Michx.

Howard County: T97N R11W Section 7 SW4 SW4 SW4 NE4
UTM (NAD83, 15T): 565779 East, 4787233 North

A disturbed mesic/wet-mesic tallgrass prairie occurs approximately 4.5 miles
west/northwest of Protivin. It is about 1 acre in size and mostly surrounded by
deciduous forest. The soil is mapped as Schley silt loam, 1 to 4 percent slopes
(407B), an Udollic Ochraqualf. The prairie is on the Iowan Surface.

There are 150-200 genets with flowers and/or fruits plus lots of vegetative
rosettes. This is probably the largest population of Cirsium muticum that I have
ever seen in Iowa. The corollas are medium purple-red. The population is
past peak bloom, as about % of the heads only have fruits. Cirsium muticum is
associated with Agrostis qiaantea. Baptisia lactea. Eupatorium perfoliatum.
Potentilla simplex. Prunella vulgaris. Solidaoo canadensis. Solidaoo qiaantea
and Verbena hastata.
