Habitat
In dry sand prairie with Andropogon scoparius, Helianthus occidentalis. Surrounded on all sides by extensive forest of Pinus banksiana, the only other common tree is Quercus velutina. Scattered.

Tree 5 m. tall. All cones on this tree are open, persisting for many years. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
