In deciduous forest understory.

Description
Shrub, branched at base, 4 m x 7 cm largest stem. Current year's growth smooth, second year's growth starting to split, bark of large stems with shallow fissures, peeling in long, thin plates. Rachis, pedicels, and calyx green. Calyx-lobes not imbricate, fused at bases to form rim. Corolla white, the petals fused to form a corolla tube. Nectary present. Ovary inferior. Phenology of specimen: Flower.

Tree-like but trees do not branch from the base. Second year stems similar to striped maple, a species not found in this preserve.
