Hill, Dec. 2000 Asteraceae ILLINOIS: LASALLE COUNTY 41° 19' 30" N, 88° 51' 30" W Ottawa 7.5 min. quad.; T. 33 N, R. 3 E, SE/4, SW/4, NW/4, NW/4, sect. 14. South Ottawa; Libby Owens Inc. property, fenced silica quarry at S side of IL Rt. 71, on peninsula at W end of E water-filled pit. Elev. ca. 480 ft. Disturbed nearly pure white silica sand with some organic material over soft (crumbling) white silica sandstone 'pavement'. Very dry. Remnant dry sand prairie with scattered dwarfed Quercus velutina, with Aristida basiramea, Panicum villosissimum, Liatris aspera, Solidago speciosa, Leptoloma cognatum, Coreopsis lanceolata. Rather common biennial or perennial ca. 0.5 m tall, foliage with scarcely any aroma - just slightly sweet-resinous. Ca. 100-200 plants, most juvenile rosettes. Steven R.
