  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. The term "Mananciais da Serra" was determined to be a general description for the large forested watershed reserve found between the town of Piraquara and the mountains "Serra do Marumbi". Although the location of a small educational complex associated with the reserve (called: "Centro de Educação Ambiental Mananciais da Serra") could be pinpointed precisely (-25.507967, -49.025191) it is unclear from the written locality description whether the collection was made in the immediate vicinity of this complex, or further distant within the reserve. Therefore, georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of the small educational complex called "Centro de Educação Ambiental Mananciais da Serra", in Mun. Piraquara, Paraná, and used the distance from the selected coordinates to the farthest visible extent of the forested watershed within the Municipality of Piraquara as the linear extent. Using Google Maps - Text Search ("mananciais da serra piraquara"), located the primary informational website for the Mananciais da Serra reserve [http://mananciaisdaserrapr.blogspot.com.br/], and for the educational center [http://www.roteirosdeciencias.com.br/#!ceam/csfj], the latter of which provided a map showing the exact location for the center. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, and What's Here Tool found coordinates (final) for the approximate geographic center of the educational complex. Using Geonames.org, visualized the boundaries for the municipality of Piraquara, and determined linear extent by using Google Maps - Measure Distance tool to measure a straight line from the selected final coordinates to the farthest visible extent of intact forest in the watershed area within the Municipality of Piraquara (-25.441023, -48.979589). Input linear extent (8739.0 m), coordinate precision (0.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Defined area).
