Description
Pileus (26-) 57-62 mm, convex becoming plane with uplifted margin and depressed center, densely matted subtomentose, red-brown (7F7 to slightly more red), fading to chamois (4C5) in age; margin, and sometimes disc, remaining red-brown. Context white, staining pale yellow; red where insect-damaged. Odor mild; taste slightly bitter. Pores round to elongated or irregular, 1-2 mm in diameter, golden blonde (4A4) becoming corn-colored (4B5) in age; staining red-brown in one specimen. Tubes concolorous; tubes long (8-10 mm). Stipe (29-) 35-50 mm, solid, equal; white to gray ground with minute, brown pruinose fibrils; reticulate, especially over apical half; pattern of pruinose fibrils creating appearance of a silvery sheen, especially over apical half. Basal mycelium copious, white. Note: one basidiome redder in color, with red-staining pore mouths, stipe more reticulate and lacking silvery sheen.
