Dear ID»*—Welch: Thg’^yggs which you sefit is Setaria verticillata (L.) Be&uw* It can easil^ be separated from other species—ef S. by the retrorsely barbed bristles. It is a queer coincidence that it should come up with the Stenotaphrum which I gave you. It was found here once, about 20 years ago, and I have looked for it every year since then without suc- cess. It is apparently spotted over the state, and I note one record from your county. Deam says that it is rather common around Bluffton, I remember it as the commonest S. at Iowa City the summer that I spent there. I imagine that; it was brought into the greenhouse in the soil and just happened to come up where it did. ___
