  • Description

SUN LEAVES. Vouchers for wood specimens, MADw, colleted from downed trees and shrubs during Hurricane Sandy the previous day. Wood specimen from trunk. Large, evidently native tree by the Pfizer Laboratory, 1.3 m in diameter, 24 m tall. The innermost ring dates back to 1905 at 7 m above the ground; therefore the tree began growing inthe decade of the 1890's. Base of petiole yellow. Leaf sample taken from sun leaves in upper canopy, and from shade leaves onone of the lowest branches, the two showing great difference in size, depth of lobing and texture, the sun leaves on twigs with more and larger terminal buds. Acorns old, from ground, but certainly from this tree. The acorn shape and the cup scales (scarcely spreading even when dry) might indicate some introgression from Q. rubra.
