At the upper margin of a narrow belt of grassland and the lower marging of an open, shrubby pine forest, on a moderate S-facing slope in gravelly loam (Morical-Wrightwood-Cagey families association, 15 to 50 percent slopes; Morical = fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Vitrandic Argixerolls; Wrightwood = coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Typic Haploxeralfs; Cagey = mixed, mesic Aquic Xeropsamments). With Achnatherum parishii, Adenostoma sparsifolium, Artemisia tridentata, Bromus tectorum, Ceanolhus greggii, Chamaesyce albomarginata, Cryptantha or Plagiobothrys sp., Dichelostemma capitatum, Echinocereus sp., Eriogonum spp., Erodium moschatum, Gilia latiflora, Nassella pulchra, Nolina parryi, Opuntia sp., Pinus jeffreyi, P. quadrifolia & Rhus trilobata.
