LIEBRE MOUNTAINS REGION: Upper end of broad alluvial valley at
head of Cienaga Canyon, southern base of Liebre Mountain, at end
of dirt road leading 1 km northeast of Knapp Ranch. Near 34° 41’
46.9”N 118° 39’ 34.0”W. T7N R17W E 1/2 SW 1/4 sec. 14.
Elev. 3600 - 4200 Feet
Gently sloping, broad alluvial fan with deep alluvial soils, adjacent
steep slopes with coarse, decomposed granite soils.
Extensive areas of loose soils on steep slopes characterized by open
stands of Eriogonum fasciculatum and Eriophyllum confertiflorum,
surrounded by more dense chaparral of Adenostoma fasciculatum,
Cercocarpus betuloides, Quercus wislizeni, Quercus berberidifolia,
and Rhamnus ilicifolia on shallower soils of rocky outcrops; deep
alluvial soils of fan with mosaic of dense low scrub of Eriogonum
fasciculatum and taller scrub of Adenostoma fasciculatum; springs
in canyon bottom with Rubus ursinus, Salix lasiolepis, Salix
laevigata, and Juncus mexicana.
Coarse, tufted perennial grass. Locally common on steep,
decomposed granite slopes.
