  • Specimen Notes

"Prof. Hooker's 'Pinus lambertiana ?' (with a question mark) actually is a Pinus flexilis collected by Thomas Drummond in the northern Rocky Mountains (Alberta) and well characterized in 'Flora Boreali-Americana' 2, p. 161-162 (Pinus lambertiana), and by T. Drummond in his 'Sketch of a journey to the Rocky Mountains. ..(Hooker's Botanical Miscellany 1, p. 205, 1830): Dr. Torrey (again the characteristic'x') has redetermined this specimen long ago as Pinus flexilis (Pinus albicaulis was then still unknown). However, in foliage alone Pinus flexilis and Pinus albicaulis are hardly distinguishable, and both species occur on the general area where Drummond collected. But, from the colour of the twig of your specimen, and especially from the description of the cone only recorded in T. Drummond's 'Sketch..' I conclude that the specimen actually is Pinus flexilis." annotation by F. Lauria, 1990.
