TORREY BOTANIQÀl CLUÛU UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE BUREAU OF PLANT INDUSTRY WASHINGTON ECONOMIO AND BY»T*MATIO BOTANY Hovember IE, 19E3. Mr, William C. Ferguson, 37 Atlantic Ave., Hempstead, H. Y. Dear Mr. Ferguson: Your letter of Hovember 9th has been received. Hordeum jubatum is native and widespread in the plains and prairies of the United States and Canada* Whether it would have reached the Atlantic coast if man had never occupied this continent and cleared away forests who can say. Its seed habits give it every opportunity to spread wherever there are grazing animals,or even stretches of open land, for the long awned joints of the rachis fly before-the wind. I should consider it native of any originally open region of the eastern United States. In deforested lands 4t must be introduced. ' Thank you very much for the specimens you sre sending us. Very sincerely yours, Agnes Chase, Acting Systematic Agrostol- ogist, Bureau of Plant Industry. New York Botanical Garden Hordeum Juba tum L. ssp. jubatum Det. & Rev.
