Open grasslands on east side of Forest, Apache County. Forest Service road 61 crossing of Gillespie Flat. Area has been overgrazed in past years.
Due to dry conditions this spring there has been little grass leaf growth
over 8” tall by this date. Plants of taxon 94-111 (Festuca calligera) have
mostly shed seed by this date, leaves 2-4” tall and close utilization has
been made of any green growth present. Dead crowns of F. arizonica common
on basil area of live plants. Clumps are greatly reduced with 50-70% old dead basil
crowns, very few leaves over 12” tall. Other grasses on site Festuca arizonica,
Poa sp. Koeleria pyramidata, Sitanion hystrix; common forbs Erigeron sp.,
Iris missouriensis, Delphinum sp., Tragopogon sp., dense mats of Antennaria sp.
Dry, clay loam, igneous origin.
