Dominant shrub Co treelet, 1-5 m. Bark mottled shades of dark grey, or almost black. Trunks and main branches sometimes flexuously zig-zag. Young foliage yellowish green, sometimes with a pinkish hue. Young fruit green or reddish, mature fruit brown. Flowers yellow, standard with orange-red net venation. Anthers of newly opened flowers crimson.
A locally common Malplghiaceous vine In full flower appears good floral mimic with similar sized yellow flowers and one of the five petals with a thickencd claw.
Centris species (collected) visiting Caesalpinia flowers for 0.5-3 secs at 5.15 pm in strong breeze and cloudy conditions. Bees very fast moving. Not seen on the Malpigh. species but may collect lipids from it?
