  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Unable to locate the precise location of "Cachoeira Tres" along Rio Abunã, but was able to confirm that the village of Fortaleza is located at approximately 16 km along Rio Abunã from the mouth of the river. Georeferenced to 9.5 km (midpoint of the offset range) along Rio Abunã from the mouth of Rio Abunã in Pando, Bolivia. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the mouth of Rio Abunã, a tributary of Rio Madeira. Beginning at the approximate geographic center of the mouth of the river, used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to measure approximately 9.5 km (9.49 km) upstream (toward the headwaters); used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent of the starting location, the mouth of the river, by measuring from the geographic center of the mouth of Rio Abunã to the farthest extent of the confluence of the rivers. Input coordinates, linear extent (0.281282 km), measurement error (.005 km), and distance precision (1 km) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius. Added half of the offset range (6.5 km) to the uncertainty radius to account for the added uncertainly of the offset provided in a range format.
