Oreomunnea mexicana (Standley) Leroy subsp. mexicana
OAXACA. Highway 175, 42.1 km S Valle Nacional on road to Ixtlan de Juarez, 4900 ft. elev. Very steep rocky, clayey, fog-shrouded hillside. Numerous huge trees (3-5 ft. DBH x 120 ft. tall) associated with tree ferns, Alsophila salvinii.
Tree 90 ft. tall, 55 ft. to first branch, trunk 16 x 27 in. DBH, fused buttresses on uphill side augmenting diameter; bark reddish-tan on outer surface, exfoliating, pinkish interior; sapwood whitish, heartwood with reddish tinge; leaves associated with flowers and fruits look ragged and tend to be inrolled along margins; fruit abundant, mature, terminal on past year's spurt of growth; male inflorescences terminal on latest spurt of growth, not associated with female flowers; new foliage of young trees pinkish, that of mature trees golden-yellow; many seedlings with hypogeous germination scattered on rich humus of forest flora.
